Za'atar is the blend that quietly makes everything taste better. Here is what it is and seven ways to put it to work this week.
What is za'atar?
A Middle Eastern blend of thyme, toasted sesame and tangy sumac. Herby, nutty, a little sharp, endlessly useful.
7 everyday ways to use it
- Dust over warm flatbread with olive oil.
- Toss through roasted vegetables.
- Stir into yoghurt for a quick dip.
- Sprinkle on fried or scrambled eggs.
- Rub onto chicken before roasting.
- Finish a salad with a pinch.
- Mix into labneh or hummus.
How to store it
Keep the jar sealed, cool and out of the light. It stays punchy for months.
FAQ
Is za'atar spicy?
Not at all. It is herby and tangy, not hot. Even the chili-shy will be fine, promise.
What can I use za'atar on?
Honestly, easier to list what you cannot. Bread, eggs, veg, meat, dips, salads. If it is savoury, za'atar probably wants in.
Does za'atar go off?
It does not spoil, it just fades. Use it within a few months while it is still loud and proud.
